hypothetically speaking about hypothetical thoughts to answer hypothetical questions

most "hypothetical" questions have actual literal answers. the word is just used to make room for other probabilities and human error... and mainly because we don't have enough balls to admit any of the negative (realistic) possibilities. yah feel me?!

sci-fi??? the so-called science in this film is the fictitious part. it simply doesn't exist

cinematographer adam kimmel (capote, lars and the real girl) deserves more credibility than mark romanek (1hr photo) himself for this kazuo ishiguro's sci-fi novel adaptation of "never let me go." predictable. formulaic. it simply failed at trying so hard to be profound. without kimmel's seamless cinematography, it would have just seemed like an acceptable, slightly higher than average kind of lifetime original movie with a relatively good cast.

mexploitation!!!

sometimes it's hard to take rodriguez's movies in because of his stylistic, peculiar, 70's mexploitation approach, but this movie was only one hour long and extremely compact. hands down hilarious and entertaining. de niro's bush/mccain-esque role and the endless, conspicuous propaganda of the current immigration issues in arizona were simply b-a-d-a-s-s.

moviemoviemoviemovie

jean-francois richet's "mesrine:" not really sure how to begin a movie review about this because it felt like a heavy stylistic (though not really a failed attempt) medley of cult films like "thelma & louise," "bonnie & clyde," "natural born killers," and "the prophet" with a lot of tarantino/goddard-esque touches. the film was a hubbub of quintessential 1970's child molester 'staches, beards and gunshots with actors who looked like a french bruce springsteen and a young german looking chuck norris. some scenes did have redeeming qualities in terms of originality, but it was absolutely far from cohesive in terms of a successful execution, both from a technical and narrative standpoint. richet seems more of a movie alchemist who takes what's already been done, and tries to somewhat pass it as something new, than an actual filmmaker. nonetheless, it was highly entertaining, especially vincent cassel's mustache which seemed like a separate entity with its very own character. overall, it might be a dodgy 3-star rating or a steady 2 1/2... the extra half is credited to gerard depardieu, who seemed to be the only cohesive element in the cinema experience.

speaking of action movies... a riveting crime-action film that deserves 4 solid stars is australia's very own "animal kingdom" by david michod. hands down one of the best movies this year, brilliant in its very own genre. a definite loss if you miss it.

el secreto de sus ojos

sometimes there are movies that leave me utterly speechless. argentine director juan jose campanella's "the secret in their eyes" did just that. it was riveting, magical and flawless. the best movie i've seen this year since michael haneke's "the white ribbon."

find an art house cinema where it plays. i promise you won't regret it.

l'épine dans le coeur

michel gondry's (eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, be kind rewind, the science of sleep) "a thorn in the heart" or “l'épine dans le coeur” is a nostalgic film portrait of the director's aunt suzette- a gray haired woman, funny, youthful, and an avante garde school teacher in 1950's rural villamagne, france. sometimes lacking in direction, the film unfolds through interviews and home movies, thematically focused on suzette's teaching career, and later segues into a very personal depiction of the gondry family's series of experiences, including her son's (jean-yves) homosexuality, who still to this day has a difficult time accepting his own identity due to his mother's unorthodox upbringing.

suzette, as mentioned before, was a respected progressive school teacher, who happened to have both michel and her own son in her classes from the 1st to 3rd grade. the irony is in the entirety of her interest towards her pupils' social and academic development, which is undeniably motherly and nurturing, while the treatment of her own son is precisely the opposite: more a teacher-pupil relationship than a mother-son one. this inevitably affects jean-yves' acceptance of his sexuality during his adulthood and, as a result, he grows up to isolate himself.

the film was undeniably beautiful in the sense that the technique was ably executed, even though a friend disagreed and thought the editing was somewhat poorly done. gondry’s captivating soundtrack choice, used more to indicate chronology as opposed to the conventional technique of provoking emotion, was perfectly effective in contrast to the organic, whimsical and melancholic delivery. the opening scene where suzette's family sat at the dining table, laughing and reminiscing, was one of the best scenes, as was the one with her sitting on the couch, teary-eyed while watching some parts of the documentary as the camera focused fully on her facial expressions for a substantial duration. the movie's ending was remarkably shown in saturated hues of a snowy day. it made up for the sense of uneasiness that I felt towards the rest of the film. it was such a subjective topic, so personal on both suzette and the director's part, that it was an effort to connect to the movie and be drawn into it. nonetheless, it was absolutely worth seeing, like an exhibit you would not particulary praise, but one which surely has the intensity to make you respond.

monday double feature, slash amateur movie review... whomp whomp ...click here to watch trailer

So... I just saw Lars von Trier's "Antichrist," on its surprising 3rd month run in the theaters, which was more visually disturbing than Korean director Park Chan-Wok's Old Boy, yet incomparable and completely irrelevant from a narrative standpoint. It was $12.50 worth and relatively 2 hours of a failed attempt to a psychological thriller/horror. Instead, it seemed like avante garde porn that features Willem Dafoe, Willem Dafoe's bloody penis, Willem Dafoe's ass (which [dis]graced the movie with its omnipresence, much like Jean Claude Van Damme's vain-glorious, gratuitous butt shots), Charlotte Gainsbourg, Charlotte Gainsbourg's hairy-for-arts-sake vagina, and a gory misogynistic shot of her scissor-snipped labia.

The movie was full of nonsensical metaphors and poor storyline that it didn't do either of the brilliant actors' good performances any justice. Did I regret seeing it? Strangely enough, no. It was somewhat of a negative experience, but it did stir up my senses. It definitely postponed my infallible clockwork appetite for dinner, and wished that the concession stand carried a puke bucket and Xanax.

On the brighter side of the movie theater experience, thank goodness for Michael Haneke's magnificent "White Ribbon." I won't go into details. Just see it!!!!!
