Explorers Club Saturday Science for Students: Whales and Seals... Oh my!!!

New York, NY (February 11, 2012) - Explorers Club's Saturday Science returns this year, launching off with a presentation from population ecologist Dr. Arthur Kopelman, whose research involves photo-identification of harbor seals in Moriches Bay, as well as New York's fin and humpback whales. Dr. Kopelman has been compiling a photographic catalog of harbor seals that haul-out at Cupsogue Beach (near Moriches Inlet) since 2006, and has shown that several recognizable seals have been returning to the same haul-out site year after year for the past 6 years. This catalog, particularly the project in the Great South Channel, plays an important role in assessing population trends, habitat usage, and potential disturbance.
